THE [17th] EARL OF STRATHMORE AND KINGHORNE, Viscount Lyon, Lord Glamis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw and Strathdichtie, Baron Bowes of Streatlam Castle, Co Durham, and of Lunedale, Co York, and Chief of the Name and Arms of Lyon born 31 December 1928, the only son of Captain (the) Honourable Michael Claude Hamilton Bowes-Lyon and Elizabeth Margaret Cator.

Michael inheirited the earldom upon the death of his first cousin Timothy Bowes-Lyon, 16th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and held it until his death,

On 10 April 1956 Michael married Pamela McCorquodale.
Michael and Pamela had three children:

  • The Hon. Michael Fergus Bowes-Lyon, Lord Glamis (born 7 June 1957)
  • Lady Elizabeth Mary Cecilia Bowes-Lyon (born 23 December 1959, married Antony Richard Leeming in 1990)
  • Lady Diana Evelyn Bowes-Lyon (born 29 December 1966, married Christopher Godfrey Faussett on 8 April 1995)
